At the time I’m writing this, social media is buzzing about the reported kidnapping of a Maryland traveler, Meka, while abroad in Tunisia. Stories like hers rise and fall in the news cycle, but the underlying concern, how to stay safe while traveling, never goes away. That’s why I’m sharing my top 5 five essential safe travel tips. These give me peace of mind and allow me to move about in today’s world with more confidence.
Tip 1: Do Your Research
Whenever I sit down to plan a trip, I do the following in this order:
- Decide where I’m going. (I usually start out with a short list of three destination to narrow down)
- Check the U.S. Department of State’s travel advisory site for any known risks and other recommended precautions (including advisory levels, recommended vaccinations, and entry/exit requirements).
- Research how I, as a Black woman traveling solo, may be perceived. I look specifically for potential racial issues, gender based restrictions, and unique risks associated with solo travel.
Other things to consider during the research phase is signing up for STEPS (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program) and researching other unique qualities to yourself that may present challenges (i.e. nationality, disabilities, mobility challenges, etc.)
Tip 2: Save Key Contacts Prior to Landing
- Hotel address and phone number
- Embassy/Consulate address and phone number
- Clearly labeled emergency contacts back home
- Downloaded or hardcopies of maps and apps you may need offline
Tip 3: Don’t Make Yourself a Target
I’ve mentioned this before countless times: blending in helps you avoid unwanted attention while abroad.
- Pack light and carry only what you need for the day.
- Use crossbody or anti-theft bags and secure them properly.
- Separate your cash: keep a small amount accessible, keep larger bills hidden.
- Dress for the environment: both the culture and terrain.
Tip 4: Stay aware and Use Common Sense
Trusting your common sense and intuition can is one of the best tools you can have.
- Be mindful of your surroundings, day and night.
- Vet ride share and taxis choices: double check licenses, license plates, track your own route on a gps,
- Share your location friends and family if makes you feel safer.
- On public transportation, keep belongings close, stay alert, avoid flashing cash or expensive accessories.
- At night, stick to well lit, well traveled areas and where shoes and clothing you can move in comfortably.
Tip 5: Protect Yourself (Legally & Practically)
I am a big proponent of person protection equipment (PPE). I never leave home without it. But before you head to the airport, train station, or cruise port, always research what’s legal to carry in your destination.
- Keep safety tools accessible: sprays, safely alarms, walking sticks, etc should be quick and easy to grab if needed.
- Keep improvised options in mind: keys, umbrellas, bags, even situational awareness can all be safety tools when used responsibly.
- Don’t overshare: avoid announcing that traveling alone or where you are staying.
Travel should be a joyful, wondrous experience, not a fear based one. Taking safety precautions isn’t about letting fear control you, it’s about giving yourself the freedom to move and embrace the journey. Think of these safe travel tips as safeguards that make space for adventure, not limits on your experience. With proper preparation and awareness, you can travel smart, travel safe, and still find wonder in all the pockets of the world.
